About the workshop
Evidence based practice and the availability of systematic reviews and practice guidelines (ANCDS; ASHA) have accelerated interest in intervention research that can be readily adopted into clinical practice. Interdisciplinary research teams have developed and tested a wide range of neurological and, other interventions for aphasia. It is imperative that clinicians have the ability to critically evaluate the treatment and determine the strength of evidence that supports new research developments and translates into clinical practice. The predominant methodology for investigating neurogenic interventions is single-subject designs. Clinicians, must develop the skills necessary to become competent research consumers and accountable practitioners.
Goals of the workshop
At the end of this workshop you will be able to:
- Become aware of recent findings in the aphasia intervention literature that can be incorporated into clinical practice
- Be familiar with basic single-subject research design principles that are important for critically appraising the intervention literature and which may help improve clinical accountability
- Understand the strengths and shortcomings of the evidence based practice (EBP) movement and be able to access relevant EBP resources for aphasia and related disorders.
