Research Interests:
I am interested in how listeners may be able to learn about their acoustic environment, and use this information to improve perceptual abilities. When we walk into a room, we quickly adapt to the acoustics of the environment, and we have shown that improved perceptual performance is observed on some tasks as a result. One implication of these results involves listeners with hearing impairment. It may be that their decreased performance on many auditory tasks involving background noise is related to an inability to learn about their acoustic environment in the same way that listeners with normal hearing can. For example, their poor performance in understanding speech in noise may be caused in part by their inability to hear the noise (and then learn from it) because of their increased thresholds.
