On May 23, 2008 a meeting was adjourned to address solutions to the
shortage of speech-language pathologists in Arizona’s schools. The meeting was hosted by
the Department of Speech and Hearing Science at Arizona State
University, in collaboration with the Arizona Department of Education,
Division of Exceptional Services, and was held at ASU's innovative, state-of-the-art
Decision Theater. All major stakeholders, including special education
directors, Arizona certification and licensing agencies, state
lawmakers, school district representatives, the University of Arizona,
Northern Arizona University, the Arizona Department of Education, the
Arizona Speech-Language-Hearing Association, parent representatives, and
the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association were present to review
data and to develop a plan to address the problem.
