Undergraduate Student Research

Participate in the excitement of discovery! Undergraduates in Speech and Hearing Science (SHS) have several opportunities to participate in speech, language, and hearing research:

Volunteer to be a Research Participant

A list of opportunities to be a participant in SHS research projects is maintained in the Office of Academic Advising for SHS, Coor Building, Room 2215 and available on the NSSLHA blackboard site. Research participants can participate in a research study for as little as one hour in some projects and up to several hours over several days in other projects. Participants are often compensated for their participation.

Enroll in the Undergraduate Research Seminar-SHS 498-Fall Semesters

Sophomores, Juniors, or Seniors with a 3.0 GPA are encouraged to enroll in the 3-hour Research Seminar, SHS 498. The Seminar exposes students to research in Speech, Language, and Hearing Science and most students will work in a lab of one of the SHS faculty on a research project. The Research Seminar is the best way to get involved with research in SHS.

Apply for a SHS Research Project-Spring Semesters

Upon successfully completing the Research Seminar, SHS 498, undergraduates may apply to pursue a Research Project with one of the SHS faculty. A 2-page application (available in the Office of Student Advising, Coor room 2215) is submitted by the student to a SHS faculty member. If the faculty member can support the proposed project, the student will work independently on the project for several hours per week during spring semester and they will present their findings at the end of the spring semester. In some cases students will receive a modest ($250) fellowship for pursuing a Research Project.

Assist a SHS Faculty Member in their Research

SHS faculty members who have grant support often use undergraduates as lab assistants. In many situations the grant pays a salary for the assistance. Students who have completed the Research Seminar are in an excellent position to apply for such lab assistant jobs. A list of such opportunities is available in the Office of Student Advising, Coor, Room 2215.

Students from Barrett, The Honors College are encouraged to pursue research in SHS laboratories as part of their undergraduate training. Multiple research experiences may be obtained, including research leading to the honor's thesis. These research opportunities are not limited to those students majoring in speech and hearing science.

Graduate Student Research

Students pursuing the M.S. may choose either a thesis or non-thesis option. The thesis option includes research in one of our research laboratories. All students are encouraged to gain research experience as part of their graduate training. Volunteer and paid research assistant opportunities are available.

Students pursuing the Au.D. are encouraged to gain research experience as part of their graduate training. An optional research experience is part of the curriculum. Volunteer and paid research assistant opportunities are available.

The Ph.D. is a research degree. Students in this program are expected to be engaged in research throughout their training.
